Glutathione and vitamin C are two of the most recognizable antioxidants in health and wellness.
Both help protect cells from oxidative stress. Both play roles in immune function. And both are commonly used in supplements and wellness treatments.
But glutathione and vitamin C aren't the same thing — and one isn't simply a stronger version of the other.
They work differently within the body and can actually interact as part of a larger antioxidant defense system. Here's how they compare.
Glutathione is an antioxidant your body naturally produces.
It's made from three amino acids:

Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant that can act in bodily fluids and cellular environments while also performing several functions unrelated to glutathione.
The body benefits from having both. It's less like choosing between two competing products and more like having different parts of the same defense system.
Both are involved in normal immune function.
Vitamin C contributes to several aspects of innate and adaptive immunity and accumulates in certain immune cells. Glutathione also helps maintain the redox environment needed for normal immune-cell function.

Glutathione and skin. Glutathione has attracted attention for its antioxidant activity and potential effects on pigmentation. It can influence pathways involved in melanin production, which has led researchers to investigate oral and topical glutathione for changes in skin pigmentation and appearance.
Some small clinical studies have reported changes in skin pigmentation with glutathione supplementation, but results vary and research remains more limited than many online claims suggest.
So while both antioxidants are associated with skin health, they aren't doing exactly the same job.
Glutathione is frequently marketed as a “detox” treatment. The reality is more specific.
Your liver already has sophisticated systems for processing and eliminating many substances. Glutathione participates in some of these processes by helping enzymes attach glutathione to certain compounds, making them easier for the body to process and eliminate.
Vitamin C also supports antioxidant defenses but doesn't serve the same role in these glutathione-dependent pathways.
So it is reasonable to say that glutathione participates in the body's natural detoxification processes. It's less accurate to claim that glutathione or vitamin C broadly “flushes toxins” from the body.
